A quick reminder that last week’s scheduled harvest and CSA distribution has been moved to tomorrow. We’ll get a better sense of how things have recovered (or not) from the freeze when we start pulling them out of the fields but I’m pretty confident we’ll have some good leeks and roots and I’m hopeful that… Continue reading Tomorrow’s Harvest and Other Updates

Ice Delay Take Two
I just took a trip to the grocery store and apparently that’s where everyone is right now. There’s also still an awful lot of slush and ice to melt and the forecast for this evening makes me think that tomorrow probably won’t be the best day for a harvest or CSA pick-up. So, the next… Continue reading Ice Delay Take Two
Ice Delay
Tomorrow’s CSA harvest will be delayed until at least Friday. Friday’s forecast looks reasonable so I’m hoping things will thaw tomorrow and we’ll be able to get into the field on Friday, but if not we’ll push the harvest until next Thursday after a full week of forecasted thaw. Hope you’re all staying warm and… Continue reading Ice Delay
Freeze Update
While I was hunkered down in the office yesterday, Sarah took a little visit to the fields to check that her dahlia babies were still tucked in to give them the best chance of surviving this nasty cold snap. She sent me this nice photo of the snow blown field. In the 24 years I’ve… Continue reading Freeze Update
Winter Radishes
I’ve had a few CSA members ask me about what to do with the winter radishes and then I got tagged in a post from Culinary Breeding Network asking the same. Definitely head over to her feed for a really beautiful illustration of different types and more on them in the near future. Here’s one… Continue reading Winter Radishes
1st Winter Share 2024
Winter got off to a good start yesterday. In the shares are leeks, radicchio, winter radish, kohlrabi, escarole, yellow carrots, frisée and mustard greens. Two heads of radicchio and both escarole and frisée was twice as much chicory as planned for, but the warm weather has sped those crops up and with the predicted freeze… Continue reading 1st Winter Share 2024
Happy New Year!
Winter CSA harvests start this week and I’m hoping at least one of the things we’ll have is escarole. Here it is two ways: in a soup, and as a fresh salad. For the salad I use the inner, blanched leaves and crispy sweet ribs, dressed with just olive oil, lemon and salt. The soup… Continue reading Happy New Year!
2023 Final Distribution and 2024 Predictions
We were treated to a beautiful, sunny day on the farm for the final fall harvest and last farm day of 2023. The share looked very similar to last week’s, just with collards instead of chard. We’re taking next week off and then we’ll be back the first week of 2024 for the first harvest… Continue reading 2023 Final Distribution and 2024 Predictions
6th Fall Share
Today’s share had two heads of radicchio, parsley, chard, black radish, parsnip, frisée, and leeks. With many of the vegetables, I try not to overload the shares by putting in too much, or repeating items week after week. Right now the radicchio is really cranking, the parsley is delicious and abundant and we have extra… Continue reading 6th Fall Share
Predictions for Sixth Fall Share
The next two weeks are our final fall shares, and final shares of the year. Looks like we’ll have more leeks and radicchio, along with a bunch green or one sort or another. I’m hoping we’ll also have some roots to give out, maybe winter radishes or rutabaga, and possibly parsnips! We’ll have more polenta… Continue reading Predictions for Sixth Fall Share
5th Fall Share
Beets, radicchio, escarole, parsley, green mustard, popcorn and leeks. The beets in the share are a winter variety, which is actually a genetic mix of varieties called 3 Root Grex. Greens are still looking good so we left them on for you to enjoy. Radicchio wasn’t scheduled to be in the shares but it was… Continue reading 5th Fall Share
Polenta
I got the Otto File polenta corn all shelled and cleaned up today. If the rain isn’t blowing sideways tomorrow we’ll set up the hand crank mill and have grind-your-own polenta available on the farm stand along with what is probably the last of the dry beans.
Corn and Beans
We grew out eight of our dry bean varieties this summer and between the good weather and giving them a head start by transplanting for the first time we actually got them in earlier than ever. It still took me a while to get to cleaning them and then to bring them to the farm… Continue reading Corn and Beans
Predictions for fifth fall share
We still have two more shares this fall, 5 and 6. Here’s my best guess for the next harvest, which will be the two weeks after Thanksgiving (the next A schedule pick up will be on November 30, the next B schedule on December 7): leeks, parsley, green mustard, escarole, beets, winter radishes and popcorn.… Continue reading Predictions for fifth fall share
4th Fall Share
Carrots, spinach, celeriac, radicchio, collards, salad turnips, and red mustard. We had a rough time with carrots this year so it’s nice to see that these worked out decently well. The red mustard looks really good, too, and we should have more of both before the end of the year. These are the last of… Continue reading 4th Fall Share
Predictions for fourth fall share
Collards or kale, mustard greens, radicchio and maybe escarole, carrots, celeriac, and possibly spinach or parsley. Winter radishes and kohlrabi were also in the plan but we’ll have to reassess next week. The warm fall we’ve been having has really increased pest pressure and resulting rot. It’s been nicer to work out in the fields… Continue reading Predictions for fourth fall share
3rd Fall Share
Beets, turnip, tomatoes, sweet peppers, chard, radicchio, escarole, arugula and leeks. A mix of things that are still hanging on from summer, things planned for later, and a few of the items we expected. The tomatoes and sweet peppers have held on for longer than expected due to the warm nights we’ve been having. It… Continue reading 3rd Fall Share
Predictions for Third Fall Share
Foggy morning today for harvesting the greens, and it burned off in the afternoon for harvesting the tomatoes and peppers. We were a little short handed so it was pretty much just harvesting and packing shares, and a little time do some cultivation at the end of the day. Here’s what I think will be… Continue reading Predictions for Third Fall Share
2nd Fall Share
Kale, lettuce, sweet peppers, onions, shallots, salad turnips, tomatoes, and celery. Lots of these items are probably done for the year after this share. This was the last planned lettuce share and we’ll have more next week but probably not after that. Sweet peppers and tomatoes have held on longer than planned, and if the… Continue reading 2nd Fall Share
Predictions for second fall shares
Once again yesterday I failed to take a field photo, busy day! But I knew I had this photo for a backup. I actually took last weekend when I was cleaning up a leftover share from the A schedule that had been sitting on the after hours table for a couple of days. I thought… Continue reading Predictions for second fall shares
