4th Winter Share

Just three items today: Radicchio, parsnips and leeks. These were the last of the radicchio and shown is palla di neve, one of the less showy green Chioggia types but definitely a hearty and delicious variety, and Rosato, one of the newer pink Verona types. I’ve been a little late to appreciating the pink varieties as I didn’t think the ones I tried when they first came out about 10 years ago tasted very good, but this one is winning me over after a good number made it through the freeze – plus they are really beautiful. Some folks got red Verona types, variegated chioggias or castlefranco. We also harvested the remaining beets but there was quite a bit of freeze damage so we offered them as seconds to anyone who wanted a project trimming out the damage.

The hard freeze we had last month is showing it’s impact but I’m still hopeful that now that we’ve made it to mid February and the days are getting longer that we’ll have enough light that some of the greens that did make it through that freeze will start regrowing for our next harvest in two weeks. We do still have more roots in the ground – yellow carrots, salsify and maybe a few turnips.

It was a cold, wet afternoon on the farm and the best way to keep warm was by spreading wheelbarrows full of compost for the summer crops to come. We also got a good bit of twine off the last of the remaining trellises which we are still taking down, very, very slowly.

News of 2024 CSA shares being available on our website was emailed to our list earlier this week. If you’ve filled out the sign up form for a farm share expect a reply early next week. It’s good to see folks signing up early and the first seeds are already germinating in the greenhouse!
