6th Fall Share

Today’s share had two heads of radicchio, parsley, chard, black radish, parsnip, frisée, and leeks. With many of the vegetables, I try not to overload the shares by putting in too much, or repeating items week after week. Right now the radicchio is really cranking, the parsley is delicious and abundant and we have extra leeks that need to be harvested so the shares are a bit heavy on those items. Some of the things I planned for and planted haven’t done well for one reason or another so it’s nice that others are filling what would otherwise be a big gap. The other good thing this time of year is that all of the produce keeps really well and since this is the final fall share and we won’t have a winter share until the first week of January, hopefully anyone feeling a little overloaded on those items will just be able to hold onto that extra in the fridge and stretch it out for a few weeks.

Next week is our final harvest of 2023. The share for our B-week will probably be about the same, but we won’t have chard so it’ll probably be collards or another green. For anyone who wants to stock up at the farm stand we’ve been having extra radicchio, cardoons, and grind-your-own polenta pretty regularly, and we should have a few carrots and heads of celery next week, too.

We actually had a bit more time for field clean up today and the pepper stakes finally got removed, almost all of the tomato twine is out now, and we made some headway stripping the bean plants from their trellises. We also got the last of the drip tape out of the field (had I already said that – well, we found a bit more if so). Once again we got incredibly lucky with the weather. A little overcast and a very pleasant temperature for harvesting.
