My apologies this didn’t get posted sooner – I wrote it Monday night, and thought I posted it, but apparently that didn’t happen… In your shares: The kohlrabi may be a new treat for some of you. First try it raw by peeling off the tough outer layer of the bulb and slicing it into… Continue reading Week 3 – fun with kohlrabi & pac choi

Todays share is the same as Tuesday with one exception: instead if broccoli raab you have mizuna. Mizuna is a salad green that can also be cooked like mustard greens in soups or stir fries. You can also try it on a sandwich or as a pizza topping. Check the last post for info on… Continue reading Week 2 take 2

Early transplant seeding
Just writing with a quick update on what’s going on in the greenhouse these days: early transplant seeding. There are a few improvements to my seed starting system this year: remay to cover the germination table and a better hand watering attachment for the hose – a Fogg-it mister which is provides a very… Continue reading Early transplant seeding

Whew! We made it through the season! The final CSA share of the year is here folks, and it’s relatively hefty. Thanks to all the Thursday folks who made the switch to Monday in advance of this freeze. Remember to protect any outdoor plumbing you may have. We’re in for a good amount of cold… Continue reading 12/2/13

Today’s share is similar to Monday’s except you have chard instead of mustard greens and no radishes – so look back at that post for some ideas and info. Remember that there is no share next week, and then the last share is the week after. We had a light frost a few weeks ago,… Continue reading 11/21/13

In the share today: leeks, mustard greens, watermelon radishes (with edible greens), yellow & orange carrots, garlic, escarole, sugarloaf chicory, parsnips, delicata winter squash. I would suggest drying things off before storing them, as everything will store better if not too wet, especially the mustard greens. The garlic too may have gotten a bit wet from everything… Continue reading 11/18/13

There are some new items today for your enjoyment: escarole, shallots, and Misato Rose radishes (the big ones that look like turnips), and mustard greens. The escarole is a chicory which you can read about in Monday’s post – basically a salad green. The shallots you can use like onions – their flavor is a bit milder. They are nice as… Continue reading 11/15/13

Well well we are well into the homestretch my friends. You are noticing a lot of similar produce week to week now. I hoped to have a bit more diversity for the late fall but due mostly to the clubroot disease issue some of that stuff is missing. However, it is not over! Still to… Continue reading 11/11/13

This share has the last of the lettuce (outredgeous variety), some golden beets, a purple top turnip or two, turnip greens, rainbow lacinato kale, a bunch of parsley (thanks to the kids garden!), 2 heads of garlic, 4 leeks (King Sieg is the new leek variety), and a long pie pumpkin (you’ve seen this one before).… Continue reading 11/7/13

We’re on the home stretch of the CSA now… 4 shares left (including this one). Today you’ll find a familiar long pie pumpkin – good for all sorts of great pumpkin uses: pie, curry, soup – and basically anything you’d use a winter squash for. Then there are the leeks, the last of the King Richard variety… Continue reading 11/4/13

Happy Halloween! In the spooky share today are a large amount of creaky carrots (a big scary haul of em!), freaky fingerling potatoes, lecherous leeks & lettuce (3 kinds of lettuce! though some are quite small), treacherous Thelma Sanders Sweet Potato acorn squash (a Missouri heirloom & quite good I think), two tyrannical tomatoes, zombie… Continue reading 10/31/13

In the share today: napoli carrots – a new variety. I think they are quite sweet right now. Good for cooking or fresh eating fingerling potatoes – probably your last helping of these. “thelma sanders sweet potato” acorn squash. An heirloom from Missouri, here’s what Territorial Seeds has to say about it: “Tender, sweet and delicious, Thelma… Continue reading 10/28/13

Hey folks! A new winter squash for Thursday peeps today: Delicata — see the previous post for info on this delicious variety. There are a couple sweet peppers from the hoophouse and the field — definitely the last from the field, but the hoophouse may yield another harvest later down the road. Carrots today are… Continue reading 10/24/13

A colorful share today, with the red potatoes that you’ve seen before, tomatoes, that are loving the heat generated in the hoophouse from all this sun, beets (finally!). Also we have Delicata winter squash today, which are very exciting due to their sweet flavor AND their amazingly tender skin which you don’t have to peel.… Continue reading 10/21/13

Cippolini’s and cabbage oh my! The cippolini onions you got today are a treat. They are sweeter than regular onions. I would try roasting them whole in the oven with the whole beets as well. You can also try making a salad dressing with one of them: saute in olive oil on medium high heat… Continue reading 10/17/13
