Lettuce, cucumbers and summer squash, red onions, lots of tomatoes, romano beans and red beets with greens. The obvious big thing in today’s share was tomatoes! They seem to be coming all at once this year and I hope they’ll slow down a little and last a long time, but you never know. The other less obvious news is that the romano beans are having a revival and we had a decent harvest today so that went into the share. We also harvested some really lovely red beets with decent greens, something different to add to your summer salads, or to pop on the grill. The red onions are the first of the storage onions we’ll be giving out over the next few weeks. They’re the same type we harvested fresh earlier in the season, but at this stage they’ll keep for weeks or months if you don’t use them right away.
We didn’t get a ton of field work done today, mostly just irrigation to keep up with the heat, and a little bit of hoeing to knock back newly germinating weeds in the recent radicchio plantings. We have lost quite a few plants to pests of one sort or another, but I also think we over-planted enough that we’ll be fine this fall and winter. In better radicchio news we tried direct seeding a few varieties this year and that seems to be going well so maybe we’ll do more of that in the future just to confuse the pests.
I told a few people today that Labor Day is next Monday – it isn’t. It’s two Mondays from now and that week we’ll have a Tuesday harvest instead of a Monday harvest. I’ll be sending out an email update about that later this week.
