Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, sweet pepper, beets, and onions are my best guess at next week’s share. The sweet peppers are likely the earliest variety we have, Jimmy Nardello, which look a lot like a hot pepper but is probably the sweetest we grow and has no heat at all. We never put hot peppers in the shares, but they’re available in the you pick for anyone who wants a little heat. As usual we should have extra lettuce and on the farm stand, probably some romano beans, a few eggplant, and possibly some basil and chard.
It was much hotter today than I was expecting, and the heat started early and lasted into the evening. This was a good day for picking the early dry bean varieties we have. None of them did particularly well and I’m not sure why. We’ll save seed and then if there are extras when we get them cleaned later this fall we’ll put them on the farm stand. I also finally got around to thinning the tardivo radicchio planting which was direct seeded for the first time. Usually we transplant these but I wanted to try seeding in the ground to get straighter roots and so far it seems to have worked well (although I may have been a little late as I forgot to adjust my planting date). We’ll have to be patient with these as I usually don’t start forcing them for harvest until the new year.
