Carrots, baby leeks, summer squash, cucumbers, a lot of tomatoes and lettuce. Story of the day was a very big tomato harvest which is a result of all of that warm weather we had when the fruit was initially setting back in June or so, and the warm weather in July that kept it growing. It’s unclear to me if this will keep up with the cooler mornings we’re having, but for now we’re harvest a lot of tomatoes and putting them in the shares so if you can’t use them all before they get over ripe I’d suggest just cooking them down and either canning or freezing the sauce for later use. The carrots are good sized this week, and not as sweet as we get with the cold weather versions but still pretty decent. Thursday may not see the carrot tops, but we kept them (mostly) on today just because they looked nice. The baby leeks were a result of me not being able to toss out a bunch of extra starts back in April when the rest of the leeks got planted. I put them in the ground, way too close together, and this week we’re harvesting them to get them out of the way of more fall plantings that need the space. If you need even more tomatoes there are a ton of cherries in the you-pick area that would be great to get off of the plants so please go pick. We have five different varieties out there and they’re all ripe.
Harvest was most of the day today, but we did manage to do a little hoeing in the radicchio, lettuce and a few other spots. The tomatoes are still getting taller so we tied those up too. Our rabbit friend is still nibbling on the radicchio starts but we’ve set a trap, crossed our fingers, and been glad we didn’t plant all of the radicchio on the edge of the field where they’re living. We have some leftover seedlings in the greenhouse so we’ll try to get the missing plants replaced on Thursday.
A few summer, fall and winter share orders have come in recently and we still have plenty of space in all of those seasons so keep ‘em coming. We literally can’t do what we’re doing without the support of CSA members and we’re super appreciative of all of the great members we have supporting the farm.
