Summer is far from over, but it’s definitely transitioning. The days are noticeably shorter, the summer squash is starting to wane, the tomatoes are starting to peak, and the sweet peppers are oh-so-close to being ready. Next week’s share should have lettuce again, back to only one head, cucumbers, summer squash, tomatoes, carrots and onions or baby leeks. We put the first few ripening sweet peppers on the farm stand today and it’s possible we might have a few more on Monday. Eggplant has been regular on the farm stand and should continue to be, in small quantities.
Today in the field we pulled the last of the onions and shallots to cure so you’ll be seeing those in the shares in the coming weeks when we have time to clean them. In their place we planted radicchio and the last of the lettuce for fall. We’re doing a better job of turning over beds as soon as crops are finished this year. It ends up being a little faster to do it that way, even though it’s tough to make the time at the moment. It’s faster because the weeds don’t have a chance to establish a stranglehold so we can clean up the beds a little faster and it also means we’ll probably have fewer weed seeds to contend with in the coming year.
