Lettuce, cucumbers, red onion, carrots, romano beans, summer squash and tomatoes. Two heads of lettuce today as I’m a little worried that otherwise we might loose some in the forecasted heat this week. Today got Emerald Oak and Carmona (red butter) but Thursday will probably see at least one different variety. I’m also not sure what the heat will do to the cucumbers, beans, and summer squash and they all seem like we might see a dip in production soon, but it’s hard to tell. Tomatoes should start ramping up, again, unclear when. Onions and carrot should be similar on Thursday. On the farm stand today we had a little bit of eggplant, the last of the potatoes (there are still more for Thursday’s farm stand), and extras on the cucumbers and lettuce. Thursday should be similar.
In the field today, more weeding as always, and more cucumber trellising as always. After thinking maybe we’d get away without staking the peppers this year we put stakes in today and I hope we’ll have time to tie up the plants, which are starting to lean, on Thursday. The winter radishes and turnips that were seeded on Thursday are mostly already up and we’ll need to cover those soon to protect them from pests.
It was a bit of an eerie afternoon with the orange tint of smoke in the sky. It did seem to moderate the temperature a bit and the forecast makes it look like that might happen in the next few days as well. Fingers crossed that the AQI stays reasonably low but even if it doesn’t we’ll be out there harvesting and irrigating on Thursday to keep the plants going. Unfortunately we’ve gotten quite a bit of practice dealing with these conditions in the past few years.
