Fourth Summer Share

Beets, parsley, green beans, cucumbers, summer squash, green onions and lettuce. Lots of notes on today’s share, and Thursday will probably be a little different. Beets are a combination of yellow and red and to be honest, this crop did not do well so just a few of various sizes. As noted last week, the parsley in today’s share matches the parsley that last Thursday got and this Thursday there should be basil instead. I was surprised at how many green beans we harvested today so they went in the shares. I’m guessing we might not have them for Thursday, but I’ve been wrong before and maybe we’ll get one more big harvest out of them. Cucumbers are starting to produce a little more reliably and in this photo is our regular green slicer (Marketmore) and our smaller yellow cuc (Salt and Pepper), and some folks may see the first of the lemon cucumbers. The green onions in today’s share are the last of them so Thursday will get a different onion, probably the first of the sweet onions, or maybe a red? The heat caught up to some of the lettuce so some folks got very mature green oak leaf and others got red speckled. Thursday will be a completely different mix of lettuces. For the first time in a while we had basically no vegetables on the farm stand, but there were beautiful bouquets and kombucha was back!

Fall plantings are starting to back up and today we got the fennel in and the beds prepped for kale and rutabaga. Those beds had been sitting a while so we had to get a little irrigation on them before we easily and successfully get the plants in there. We’re mostly staying on top of the weeds so far this year, which is kind of amazing, but still far from perfect. I suspect that will fall apart when all of the new plantings go in over the next couple of weeks and we suddenly have twice as many plants that need attention. Still, we’re in a better place this time of year than we’ve been for a long time and most of the plantings are looking very good. Tomatoes and even sweet peppers are sizing up fruit so now we just wait for them to start coloring up and all the warm days in the forecast should really help with that!
