It feels like we’re finally getting enough warm weather for the summer squash and cucumbers to start producing so those should be staples for the next month or two, with some variation in the varieties. We should have lettuce, although next week’s planting was one where multiple different varieties were planted due to poor germination in the greenhouse so not everyone will see the same lettuce. The beets I predicted for this week will go in next week’s shares. Green beans are tapering off and may be on the farm stand and we have some yellow pole beans coming but those look like they’re more than a week away from being ready. This week Monday got basil and Thursday got parsley and that will flip next week so Monday should get parsley and Thursday should get basil. I think we’ll have the last of the green onions before we get into fresh bulbing onions in the upcoming weeks. Tomatoes are very close, but like the pole beans I think they’re at least a week or two away from making it into the shares. One other item that was a surprise in the shares today was rhubarb, so we might harvest some more of that and put that in Monday’s shares too.
The reason the rhubarb was in the shares today was that we’re needing to replant the bed next to it and it was starting to take over so we needed to cut it back. On the opposite side of that field we cut back the raspberries too. That should help both of those crops produce better in the long run and it will definitely help the kale, collards and rutabagas that we’ll be planting there soon for fall and winter harvests. In addition to preparing fields for upcoming plantings we also got a bit of weeding, cucumber trellising, and tomato tying done, not to mention irrigation which is basically always running when we’re at the farm these days to keep things growing.
