Predictions for Summer Share #3

It looks like it’s going to warm up this weekend so I’m keeping my fingers cross that will mean the summer crops like summer squash and cucumbers finally start producing something other than a slow trickle. We’ll have lettuce as usual, new potatoes should be back in the shares, there are some gold beets that look like they’ve finally sized up enough to give out. Green beans are a maybe, and if they’re not in the shares they’ll at least be on the farm stand. Tomatoes are getting close, but I don’t think we’ll have any for at least another couple of weeks. Parsley or basil are other possibilities, as are French Gray shallots which we just pulled out of the field and are currently curing.

Meanwhile, in the field we’ve miraculously been keeping up on our weeding and planting. We’re even getting a bunch of compost spread which is something we’ve been putting off for a few years and should be very good for the future crops, as well as the ones that are in the ground now. The “compost” is really just the piles of weeds and other vegetable material that we’ve pulled out of the field over the past years and let sit in piles to decompose. It takes a few years of waiting that way, but the end product is actually looking pretty nice.

Hope you all have a great holiday weekend and we’ll see you next week!
