Predictions for Second Spring Share

Lettuce, turnips/radishes, kale/collards, choi, green onions. I’m not sure if the radishes will be ready for the A week but they’re coming and we still have turnips from our first planting so there will at least be more of those. Similarly, the first planting of kale didn’t do wonderfully well, but the collards look like they’ve caught up so we’ll likely have one or the other in the shares. There’s also the possibility that we might have some chard but it looks like the leaf miner has really hit that hard so we need to do some clean up and it’ll take a few weeks for that to recover. We might have some on the farm stand though. More red mustard might be in the mix as well or at least on the farm stand. One other item that should stick around the farm stand for a few more weeks is rhubarb, and the culinary herbs, including chive blossoms, are all in the you-pick area.

We’ve been doing a ton of planting in the field. The warm weather meant that the eggplant and peppers went out earlier than ever, which was a little bit of a gamble with the night time temperatures, but they seem to be doing ok and were happy to get out of the greenhouse and into the ground. We also planted cucumbers, summer squash, popcorn, beans, winter squash, and more carrots and arugula. The crows promptly set about pulling out most of the corn and winter squash which is always frustrating and a little random. We’ve replanted what we can and we’ll keep an eye on it.
