Spring Share #1

It was great to see lots of old CSA members and new ones tonight at our first spring pick up of the year. In the share were: lettuces, rhubarb, salad turnips with greens, red mustard, arugula and baby leeks. A decent start to the season and not exactly the predicted share, but pretty close. Two types of lettuce, a mini butter and a small summer crisp head. The rhubarb was a last minute addition and we had more on the farm stand and should have more for the next week or two. The baby leeks are actually leeks that had gone through the entire winter but were planted very, very close together so they never gained much size. That was a bit opportunistic while we’re waiting for the green onions to get a little bigger. Next week will see green onions and possibly a slightly different mix of lettuce types. It’s definitely salad season!

In the field today the main order of business seemed to be knocking back the grasses that were taking over a few beds and our “compost” pile that we need to spread on the beds. We also managed to move the very large chunk of concrete that we started to unearth last week a few feet and up to the soil surface. At this point we might be able to get it to the edge of the field before that bed gets planted, definitely the goal but it’s not going to be easy.

We still have two CSA shares available for our Spring B schedule which starts next Thursday. If you’ve already signed up look for details on picking up your first shares in your email tomorrow.
