Summer CSA share – Week 9 of 13

A bit of a crazy day today, trying to catch up after last week’s heat wave through our schedule into a bit of disarray. Thanks to everyone at pick up this evening for waiting so patiently to collect your shares. Here’s what was in this week’s shares, and will likely also be in Thursday’s share: lettuce, tomatoes, onions, summer squash, cucumber, and potatoes. The potatoes are Russian Banana fingerlings. I haven’t grown this one before, or at least not for many, many years, but a lot of the varieties I like weren’t available this spring so I figured we’d try it. While the cucumbers and summer squash start to wane, the tomatoes are hitting their stride. The lettuce is still a bit small after that first heat wave.

Last week’s heat wave really did a number on the most recent planting of lettuce so we’ll have to see if we can recover from that – it was a big planting of lettuce for the fall, but I think we’ve got some back ups. Neither heat wave was catastrophic all at once, but the effects are definitely adding up and making this one of the more challenging summers.
