Happy Winter Solstice!

We finished up our fall season on what was nearly the shortest day of the year. We got super lucky with the weather, cold, but not freezing or wet, and harvest went smoothly. Now we have a little more than two weeks before our winter shares start. No predictions yet, but if you signed up… Continue reading Happy Winter Solstice!

Sixth Fall Share

The final share of the season: frisée, black radish, rutabaga, collards, leeks, carrots, radicchio and popcorn. The popcorn is Dakota Black which we’ve grown on the farm for a few years now. I posted a video on IG a few years ago that shows how I pop it. It’s an extra big share of carrots… Continue reading Sixth Fall Share

SNAP and DUFB

For many years now one of the ways our members can pay for their CSA shares is by using SNAP benefits (these used to be known as food stamps). The Pacific NW CSA Coalition has helped simplify this payment method for us in a number of ways, as it’s not a totally straightforward transaction since… Continue reading SNAP and DUFB

Fifth Fall Share

Not quite what I predicted: radicchio, mustard, turnip, carrot, leeks, escarole hearts and chard. The radicchio for Thursday is sugarloaf but Monday will likely be a mix of types. The turnip is a new one for us, Aprovecho Hardy. The leeks are the first harvest of our winter variety, blue solaise. Escarole was a bit… Continue reading Fifth Fall Share

Predictions for the Fifth Fall Share

Looks like I forgot to post this last week but here it is, the prediction: December! That’s the easy part of the prediction, the trickier part is what’ll be in the share. Here’s what the plan made last winter was: leeks, collards, escarole, radicchio, carrots, and winter radish. Most of those things we’ll probably have… Continue reading Predictions for the Fifth Fall Share

Fourth Fall Share

Radicchio, mustard greens, winter radish, rutabaga, carrots, celeriac, kale. The radicchio pictured is Treviso precoce, but some folks got Verona or Chioggia and we’ll continue to have a mix of varieties. They’re all great in their own ways, and we typically have plenty of extras on the farm stand, too. The winter radish this week… Continue reading Fourth Fall Share

Third Fall Share

Another nice one today: escarole, arugula, sweet peppers, salad turnips, spinach, watermelon radish, carrots, leeks and collards. On the farm stand we had the last of the lettuce and the first of the radicchio, along with a last few sweet peppers, daikons, and red beets. In the field we had time for a little cleanup,… Continue reading Third Fall Share

Second Fall Share

Lettuce, leeks, hakurei turnips, beets, daikon, fennel, sweet peppers, celery and chard. All this warm, sunny weather we’ve been having has meant the summer veggies are holding on later than usual and we’re getting more growth than usual for the fall veggies. This is probably the last of the lettuce, sweet peppers. Celery and daikon… Continue reading Second Fall Share

First Fall Share

Lettuce, tomatoes, kale, sweet peppers, salad turnips, carrots, kohlrabi, and spinach. The lettuce is red leaf and this might be the last lettuce share of the year, or we might have one more after this. Tomatoes are a bit of a bonus this week and they are definitely on their way out. The kale is… Continue reading First Fall Share

Predictions for first fall share

Here’s what I’m guessing will be in Thursday’s share: lettuce, kale, spinach, carrots, kohlrabi, salad turnips and sweet peppers. We should have extras of just about everything on the farm stand unless we sell a lot of shares between now and Thursday – we still have 14 shares available so if you haven’t signed up… Continue reading Predictions for first fall share

Final Summer Share

The last share of this year’s summer season is on the first week of fall and it’s a very fall like share. We still have lettuce, tomatoes and sweet peppers in there. Parsley, spinach and salad turnips make their return with the cooler weather, and leeks show up for the first time this year! I… Continue reading Final Summer Share

Cook With What You Have

For a number of years now one of the perks of being a CSA member has been access to the excellent recipe collection at cookwithwhatyouhave.com. My good friend Katherine Deumling poured so much good energy and cooking knowledge into this site. It started as a resource for CSA farms here in the PNW and is… Continue reading Cook With What You Have

Twelfth Summer Share

A big load of roots today along with some other nice items: lettuce, collards, tomatoes, sweet peppers, yellow onions, beets and carrots. We needed to clear the carrots and beets today to make way for a fall seeding of fava beans – plus they were ready to go – so a nice big share of… Continue reading Twelfth Summer Share
