The easiest part of the prediction is that it’s going to get dark during pick up and we’ll have the lights on at pick up. Here’s what we’re hoping to have in the shares: kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, carrots, winter radishes, parsnips, and either escarole or radicchio. The escarole is ready, but if we have enough radicchio we’ll put that in the shares instead and save the escarole for later in the year.
You might have noticed that we finally got some rain! By the end of today we’d had over 2” this week, enough to really soak the farm and bring a definitive end to irrigation season. This might be the longest year of irrigation we’ve ever had. While it’s always a little harder to work in full rain gear and mud, we were definitely ready for some rain and are happy to see it return. The other phenomenon you might be familiar with is that the hardest part about getting out in the rain is leaving the house. Once you’re in it with good rain gear on it’s never as bad as it seemed like it from inside. To celebrate the return of the rain we started breaking down the irrigation system to keep it from freezing (in hopes that it will actually freeze at some point this winter) and from being buried in winter weeds. We’ll spend the next few weeks rolling up drip tape and pulling sprinkler lines out of the fields, along with all of the other summer clean up on the farm.
