Fall Share 2A

Spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, collard greens, leek, sweet peppers, carrots and celery. We had a big tomato harvest today, probably due to the warm, sunny weather we’ve been having; same for the sweet peppers. The celery is the biggest we’ve ever grown, maybe too big for the first time ever, and that’s also likely due to the warm weather. Lettuce is on its way out, this may be the last of it for the year before we transition to chicories for the rest of the fall and winter. The collards, kale and chard would prefer a little more rain and cool weather right now but I’m sure that’s coming and we were able to get enough for today’s harvest and to have a bit on the farm stand. Also on the farm stand we had a bit of winter squash along with the last of the basil. We did not have a good winter squash harvest, largely due to the crows taking out most of the plants shortly after we planted them so there won’t be any in the shares this year, only on the farm stand.

The harvest was so big today that we didn’t have any time for field work. Most of what needs to be done in the field these days is clean up from the summer: taking down trellises, cleaning up finished plantings, and cleaning up around the borders. It’s all work that we can slowly chip away at for the next few months.
