Week 1 is off to a good start with kale, salad turnips, fennel, tomatoes, sweet peppers, spinach, onion and shallot, and lettuce. This is way more items than we usually have in the share, a bit of a collision of some of the summer crops hanging on, and some of the fall crops being ready earlier than planned for. The kale this week is Lacinato Rainbow, a favorite of mine with a lot of variation in color and leaf shape. The fennel is a new variety for us this year, Finale, and it got huge! The spinach also got bigger than usual, and with a little luck we might actually get another round of harvest in a few weeks. Sweet peppers are abundant right now, and even the tomatoes saw a bit of a resurgence today, one last gasp I expect. The onion is a cipolla type, flat and pale yellow, and there is also a red shallot.
On the farm stand we had the last of the cucumbers, a few more romano beans, sauce tomatoes and eggplant. We might have most of those on the farm stand next week. The share should also look similar, maybe a different kale, and definitely a different lettuce.
Today was pretty much harvest and packing shares all day with very little time for any field work. We got luck that the rain held off and as I type this it is definitely raining hard so I hope we get a good soaking for the field and then some dry weather early next week so we can continue with weeding, and maybe even planting some cover crops.
