Predictions for Fourth Spring Share

We’re down to the last two weeks of spring after a short season this year. It looks like we should have arugula, lettuce, salad turnips, chard or kale and green onions. We’re keeping an eye on carrots and kohlrabi as possibilities so I’m hopeful those will be in there too. We’re picking peas and those will at least be on the farm stand after being set back severely by some nibbling critters when they were planted. Fava greens are another possibility. Every year about this time we start to transition from spring to summer crops and often there’s a bit of a gap between our last plantings of spring crops and summer crops if the late spring weather cools off, and this is one of those years where we’ve been seeing cooler late spring temps. The good news is that it hasn’t been too cool so as soon as we get some more sunny, warm days the summer crops should start taking off.

Today it’s raining, saving us some irrigation work. In anticipation I worked an extra day last week to finally get all of the leeks for this winter and fall planted, the last of the first big push of plantings. At this point we have a few weeks of lighter plantings and we’ll concentrate our efforts on getting the summer crops weeded and trellised before a second big push of plantings for the fall and winter.

We’re also getting ready for summer CSA harvests! Our summer season starts just after the solstice and at that point we’ll be back to weekly Monday and Thursday harvests, double the number of harvests we do in the spring! We only have four shares that aren’t spoken for so if you haven’t signed up yet do it now, and if you can sign up for Monday that’s where we have space. If you’ve already signed up for a share look for an email later next week with all of the pick up details for your first summer share.
