Winter Share #5

Leeks, carrots, scorzonera, mache, chard, and parsnip. Mache was kind of a surprise today, and a bit of a treasure hunt. I wasn’t expecting to have enough, and there was just enough for the shares picking through the poor germination and weedy beds. It’s definitely a fun little salad treat that prefers really cold weather so this year was a bit marginal I suppose. If you haven’t had it before give it a good wash and pick off any yellowing leaves but keep the florets whole and eat them that way. I usually just put a bit of lemon, olive oil and salt on it. The chard is just starting to grow back so it’s small. The roots have been in the ground a long time at this point so they’re big, and the same goes for most of the leeks. On the farm stand we had the last of the radicchio and the first of the collard and kale raab. This feels pretty early for raab but I guess it’s been a super warm winter so everything is earlier than usual.

We got almost nothing done in the field today other than harvest. It takes quite a while to get all the dirt off of the roots and to clean up all of those leeks. The weather was excellent though, mostly dry but a few sprinkles and a very pleasant temperature. It even stayed light out until the end of CSA pick up – first time this year! Two weeks from now is our final winter harvest and CSA distribution, and we’ll be in daylight savings by then so there’ll be plenty of light. I’m hoping for more days like today, or even drier between now and then so we can get some beds prepped and planted! Lots of that coming up…
