Summer Share 8 of 13

Tomatoes, summer squash, romano beans, cucumbers and lettuce. Finally there were enough tomatoes for folks to get a couple in the share and with all of this heat I’m hoping Thursday will be the same. Similarly, the romano beans are finally producing, and I had a nice little dish of romano beans with some of the red onion from last week tonight for dinner. On the farm stand we had chard, eggplant, extra cucumbers and lettuce. There are two heads of lettuce in the shares today because with all of this heat it’s starting to bolt and it’ll keep much better in your fridge (or your stomach) than in the field. Thursday’s share and farm stand will probably be similar, but the weather is forecast to be very different!

Most summers we’re spoiled by consistently dry weather which means we have quite a bit of control over irrigation and drying down crops like onions, dry beans and other seed crops. This will potentially be the second significant rain so today we ended with picking as many of the dry beans that are ready as possible, although most are still leathery or green. We’re also pulling the onions out of the field to make way for our final fall plantings of lettuce and chicories. The onions and shallots look great this year and I’m guessing there are a bunch of factors there – best summer soil on the farm, full rest for that field last year, a change in the way we planted, and good timings on weeding.  Now we just need to get them all cleaned and keep them from getting to wet from rains so that we can give them out.
