Predictions for Summer Share #8

Lettuce, carrots, summer squash, cucumbers, and romano beans. Maybe with the forecasted heat this weekend the tomatoes will finally ripen enough fruit to put them in the shares, but if not they’ll be on the farm stand again. I’m hoping that we’ll have enough basil for Thursday to get that in their share as Monday got it last week. We’ll probably have a few eggplant and bunches of chard on the farm stand. We might have rhubarb again as well as it continues to want to take over its neighboring crops. There’s lots in the you-pick area right now with cherry tomatoes getting started, padrons to pick, cucamelons, shiso and other herbs all ready.

In the field we’re still planting for fall and winter, and trying to stay on top of all of the weeds in all of those new plantings. The rain this past week was great for the new plantings, and it was also great for the weeds! What it was not great for are a few different seed crops we’re trying to dry down, but with the upcoming forecast we should be good there and we need to start getting those out of the field before the rains come back in earnest. One unintentional crop that’s doing well this year is blackberry! If anyone wants to pick those feel free – and a hot tip is that it’s easier to pick the fruit if you first prune back the new canes which tend to grow in front of the fruiting canes – plus, we really need to prune back all of the blackberries anyways to keep them from taking over the farm. Bring your pruners with you next time you come to the farm, and if you want to do more pruning we have other things around the fence lines that need to be cut back too!
