Summer Share 7 of 13

I forgot to take a photo of the share while I was at the farm but fortunately I brought home an almost complete share: chard, Amarosa and German Butterball potatoes, red onions, cucumbers, summer squash and lettuce. Monday is also getting a stem or two of basil and Thursday will hopefully get that in week 8. The Amarosa potatoes are one of my favorites for their red color all the way through and some of the back story which includes that they were bred here in Oregon at OSU and almost didn’t get released to market. The cucumbers are Salt and Pepper and Lemon and we also have had Marketmore and Armenian cucumbers on the farm stand. As we do most seasons we have three varieties of summer squash and right now the Patisson Golden Marbe Scallop are the most abundant, but we also have two types of zucchini on the farm stand. Tomatoes continue to come in slowly so those have also been on the farm stand.

The weather today was a nice change from all the heat we’ve been getting, very mild temps all day and the recently seeded spinach should appreciate that. Winter radishes and turnips that were seeded just Friday are already germinating. Today we were able to put a little time into knocking back the weeds both in newer plantings and in some of the earlier plantings that are still maturing. We still need hot weather and sun to ripen more of the summer fruit, but today was hot enough and I’m happy to have more days like that in the forecast.
