Winter Share #1

We had a nice sunny day to start our winter season off. There was a light frost in the morning, but not enough to slow us down and if anything it’s just making the vegetables sweeter. In the first share we have: collards, winter radish, leeks, carrots, mustard greens and two heads of radicchio. Most of the winter radishes we gave out are Blauer Winter, with purple skin and a white interior. Some folks may have gotten a Misato Rose, with a green skin and red interior. Both have some damage but nothing that shouldn’t be able to be trimmed away. Similarly you may find a few carrots with a bit of superficial damage that can be trimmed.

Due to the relatively warm fall weather the radicchio is ahead of schedule so we have two heads in the shares today. Everyone got a Palla di Neve, probably the plainest looking one we grow but one of the sweetest and best storing, too. The second head was either a Castelfranco or Treviso Precoce type. We also dug some Treviso Tardivo radicchio for forcing and with a little luck we’ll have those soon, along with some Belgian Endive we dug for forcing back in December.

Most of the field work right now is spreading leaves to suppress weeds, and then ultimately to help feed the soil. The church supplied us with a good pile that we’ve nearly exhausted. With the dry conditions I was also able to hoe the overwintering green onions.

The next share will be in two weeks and I’ll try to give a prediction next week.
