Fall Share #6

The final share of the season and next week’s share should be similar: kale, parsnip, carrots, rutabaga, leeks, frisee, radicchio, and red mustard. Now that it’s been a bit colder and we’ve had a few light frosts I can taste the greens and roots starting to sweeten. There’s also a bit of damage on some of the roots, but that should be skin deep and easy to peel off. Any damage should be peeled before storage if you’re not using the roots right away If you’re not using them right away they’ll still store well if the damage is removed. The radicchio in the photo is a Treviso Precoce type, the first of those we’ve harvested this year, but as with most weeks there’s a choice of types.

It was a chilly day, damp and breezy with temperatures in the high 30’s all day. We’re all pretty good at dressing for it at this point, but even at that the chill does start to seep in eventually. It didn’t slow us down too much and we got the harvest down quickly, spent a good amount of time washing a lot of mud off the roots, and even had time to continue taking down trellising.

One exciting development on the farm has been a few recent afternoon visits by a red tail hawk! It’s been hanging out on the trellising and in the surrounding trees. Puffed up with the cold it is huge! I’ve also never seen one hanging out so close to the ground so that’s been fun.
