Green onions, basil, green beans, new potatoes, fava beans, summer squash, kale and lettuce (not shown). Lots of green onions in the share but these are the last of them for the year and we needed the space to plant more beets. The green beans were in the original plan but I never trust that we’ll actually get them on time – this year they were on schedule. Some folks might get a yellow variety and we also have the more delicate haricot vert type on the farm stand. There was a bit less of most things in the share than we hoped, not sure why yields are a little lower on the beans and potatoes in particular. The basil has been struggling a bit with downy mildew but the warmer temps and some hard pruning/harvests might help it recover.
As usual for this time of year we’re starting to get a little overwhelmed with all of the field work that needs to be done. Lots of weeds that would be ideal to take care of right now, but that we’re not quite getting to, a bunch of plantings coming up in the next month that it would be great to prepare for. We’ve put the word out and we’re hiring to help fill the gap. A few good applications have already come in so fingers crossed! A lot of the crops in the field are growing well though and haven’t seemed to notice that we’re not paying as much attention to them as we think we should. In particular the corn, squash and beans look better than they have in years, and I’m already seeing fruit sizing up on the tomatoes!
