Cook With What You Have

For a number of years now one of the perks of being a CSA member has been access to the excellent recipe collection at cookwithwhatyouhave.com. My good friend Katherine Deumling poured so much good energy and cooking knowledge into this site. It started as a resource for CSA farms here in the PNW and is exceptional at providing recipes for the kinds of produce we grow here. I know that many of our CSA members have enjoyed her newsletters and recipes.

Sadly, Katherine passed away from cancer earlier this year after many years of living with it. She was always public about her journey with cancer and how she used food as part of her treatment. The future of the website is in flux at this point but I’m optimistic that people she worked with will manage to keep it active, and possibly even growing.

Below I’m sharing the recent post made by Katherine’s husband, Brian:

Celebration of life for Katherine is Sunday, October 2, 2pm (arrive early). Please feel free to share and/or forward.

If you’re unable to attend, you can leave a message/anecdote on Katherine’s obituary page – https://obits.oregonlive.com/…/katherine-deumling…

Finger food/light hors d’oeuvres and water will be provided. Please bring your own dishes – plates, cups, utensils, napkins – to minimize trash.

We strongly encourage arriving at Mt. Tabor before 2 pm given that parking will be restricted/limited and you will very likely need to do some walking to get to the amphitheater. Please bike, walk, take public transportation, and/or park in the surrounding neighborhoods.

In case of inclement weather, a notice will be shared and the celebration of life will be held at the Franklin High School Performing Arts Center, 5405 SE Woodward Street, Portland, OR 97206.

Katherine supported a number of organizations and causes personally and through her business. Her family asks that if you are so moved – and in lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to and learn more about one or more of the following: Street Roots, POIC + RAHS , CSA Partnerships for Health and the Pacific NW CSA Coalition.

Thanks so much to Metropolitan Group for the design work, Lynzee Lynx for the photo and Laleña Dolby for the quince branch drawing, which Katherine also used for her tattoo.
