Predictions for Summer Share #8

Tomatoes have started producing and with a little luck we’ll have them regularly through the end of the season. Lettuce has been suffering from the heat but we should still have small heads next week. Summer squash and cucumbers are up and down a bit with the heat and cool but they should continue for… Continue reading Predictions for Summer Share #8

Summer Share #7

Lettuce, red onion, cucumbers, chard, summer squash, tomato, baby leeks. Monday’s shares also have basil so that’s shown in the middle of the photo and Thursday got the basil two weeks ago. From here out we’ll probably put any remaining basil on the farm stand and if you’d like to make a larger batch of… Continue reading Summer Share #7

Predictions for Summer Share #7

Word of the day yesterday was HOT! I’m not sure all the reasons it felt even hotter than our last heat wave, but it looks like it’s going to stay warm through next week. I’m optimistic that this will mean we’ll have the first taste of ripe tomatoes in the shares. The cherry tomatoes in… Continue reading Predictions for Summer Share #7

Summer Share #6

A little smaller one this week: kale, shallots, cucumbers, sweet onion, summer squash, butter lettuce. The kale is a new variety for us which has collard shaped leaves and we’ve planted especially for winter production, but are curious to see how it does in the summer too. So far it’s vigorous so that’s a good… Continue reading Summer Share #6

Predictions for Summer Share #6

We’re solidly into the middle of summer now and it’s a bit of a funny lull in our harvest schedule some years as we wait for tomatoes and peppers to ripen. The romano beans ended their first flush of fruits pretty abruptly after Monday’s harvest, sped up by the heat the prior weeks no doubt.… Continue reading Predictions for Summer Share #6

Summer Share #5

Lettuce, summer squash, carrots, cucumbers, romano beans, sweet onion and parsley. The cucumbers, especially our Salt and Pepper white cucumbers are really starting to produce. We had a bit of chard as well as extras on the lettuce, beans, cucumbers and summer squash on the farm stand today. We’ll see how well the beans continue… Continue reading Summer Share #5

Predictions for Summer Share #5

Should be a similar share to this past week I think. Today’s shares got Romano beans instead of the green beans and that should be the case for next week’s share too. Carrots will likely be in there, lettuce, a sweet onion or two, more summer squash and cucumbers, maybe some parsley. We’re probably done… Continue reading Predictions for Summer Share #5

Summer Share #4

Chard, summer squash, beets, green beans, fresh red onion, cucumber, lettuce and (not pictured) basil. A few additional notes on the shares: basil was in the Monday share but won’t be in the Thursday share as Thursday got basil last week; also like last Thursday, two heads of lettuce today but probably just one on… Continue reading Summer Share #4

Predictions for Summer Share #4

Thursday members got the first cucumbers today, as well as a bit of basil added to the shares. Both of those items should be in Monday’s share next week, as well as summer squash, green crisp lettuce, beets, chard and fresh onions. Tomatoes are coming soon, and more beans are on their way, too. I… Continue reading Predictions for Summer Share #4

Summer Share #3

Collards, Yukon Gold potatoes, summer squash, French Gray shallots, green beans, carrots, two heads of lettuce. A share full of great hot-weather-meal making items. The shallots are the most unusual item in this week’s share. They’re a true shallot, unlike the shallots we normally give out a little later in the summer or fall. They… Continue reading Summer Share #3

Predictions for Summer Share #3

Looks like it’s going to be a hot weekend, right through the beginning of next week. We’re increasing the irrigations a bit, hoping to keep the greens happy a bit longer, specifically the lettuces. Chard went in last week’s share instead of the collards so they should be in this coming week’s share. Summer squash… Continue reading Predictions for Summer Share #3

What to do with favas?

I shelled mine, boiled them briefly in salted water, then cooked pasta in that water while I sautéed some shiitakes from Cloud Cap Mushrooms. Then I added chopped parsley, tossed all of that with the pasta and a good amount of pecorino romano cheese. We ate that with a nice salad from the farm lettuce… Continue reading What to do with favas?

Summer Share #2

Chard, summer squash, parsley, fava beans, beets with greens, baby leeks, new potatoes, butter lettuce. So much good stuff. Favas have a reputation as being a lot of work, but really there are simpler ways to prepare them, and much more complicated ones. The first way I ever had them, and one I still prepare… Continue reading Summer Share #2

Predictions for Summer Share #2

Week one went well with fewer items than planned, but good size on the ones that did make it in! Having skipped early spring harvests I’m a little thrown off by the start of lettuce and kale season being with full sized heads and the turnips being something other than baby, but it’s also nice!… Continue reading Predictions for Summer Share #2

Summer Share #1

We’re off to a good start with the predicted items in the share: red leaf lettuce, Lacinato Rainbow kale, fava greens, Hakurei turnips with greens, baby carrots and a first pinch of basil. Fava greens may not be familiar to all but basically they’re the tender tips from the tops of the fava plants and… Continue reading Summer Share #1

Summer Share Predictions, Week 1

Next week is our first Summer CSA harvests and here’s what I think we’ll have: lettuce, salad turnips, carrots, kale, fava greens, and the first pinch of basil. Of course it could be completely different once we actually start pulling roots and cutting the greens. Other strong possibilities for the near future are parsley, beets… Continue reading Summer Share Predictions, Week 1

Field Notes and Summer CSA

Less than two weeks before our summer CSA season starts and right now the prospects for our first harvest are looking good. I’ll save the share predictions until next Thursday and for now just say that it’s likely to be a nice mix of sweet and crunchy greens and roots. For any former CSA members… Continue reading Field Notes and Summer CSA

Successful Farm Work Party #2

Last Sunday’s work party was great! So many wonderful people of all ages getting so much done in just two hours of perfect working weather. All of the perennial herbs got pruned and weeded, cherry tomatoes got tied up and trellis strings are in place for the runner beans, the melons and annual herbs got… Continue reading Successful Farm Work Party #2

Add ons and Field Notes

Once again I got so busy with field work on Thursday that I forgot to take a photo of the fields. We’re making steady progress on planting, knocking back the weeds and putting up trellises. Tomatoes, cucumbers, and pole beans all have scaffolds to climb now! Our Summer CSA will be starting at the end… Continue reading Add ons and Field Notes

Farm Work Party #2 This Weekend

Sunday, June 9, 10:30-12:30 There was enough positive feedback from the first work party last month, and people who couldn’t make it and wanted to come to one that I scheduled another for this Sunday. Same deal as the last one, very informal and a chance to come see what’s happening in the fields and… Continue reading Farm Work Party #2 This Weekend
