Winter Share #6

Our final share for this winter: leeks, fava greens, yellow and orange carrots, root parsley, beets with greens and salsify. We also had collard and kale raab on the farm stand, and were giving out some pretty large cardoons to anyone who wanted one, I even left a few behind with the after hours shares in case someone wants one with their after hours share. Fava greens were the one new item in the share, something we only do once or maybe twice a year. I like them just sautéed in olive oil with salt and a little balsamic (I like a lot of things this way). They’re very much like eating fava beans in terms of flavor, just with much, much less work. We went heavy on the roots today for two reasons: one is that there are six weeks until our next CSA share so we wanted to make sure you all have enough to eat out of your fridge between now and then, and the other was that we needed to clear out the beds to make way for spring and summer plantings.

Other than harvesting and packing the shares we didn’t get a whole lot done today. Sara did get the trellis lines up for the peas which are just starting to grow. Normally we don’t put them up this early but the t-posts were still in place from the tomatoes last year, and we hadn’t wound up the twine yet so we’re just putting it right back in place instead of winding it up and setting it out later. This sounds clever, but it actually created a few problems, mostly in making it trickier to prepare the beds and protect them after planting, so I’m not sure we’ll do it again this way.

There’s so much to plant out right now, and still a bit of field clean up to do. I’m planning a last minute work party on Saturday afternoon – emphasis on the work part, but farm work is always a party, isn’t it? If you want to stop by and pitch in I’ll be at the farm from at least 1-4pm. Any recorded volunteer hours are eligible for farm stand and CSA share credit. On the topic of CSA shares, we still have about 19 available for spring which starts at the end of April/beginning of May.
