Collards, radicchio, carrots, root parsley and beets. Tricky to say what might be on the farm stand but possibly extra radicchio, escarole, and winter radishes. I know I’ve mentioned this before but it’s always funny trying to figure out what to give out and what will hold for the last two harvests in March. Mostly everything is ready in the field right now so we’re just holding it out there if we don’t harvest it. And, we don’t have time to harvest it all nor do you probably have enough room in your fridge even if we did, so every harvest day I try to estimate what would make a nice mix and we have time to pull out of the field.
I forgot to take a field photo last Thursday so here’s a photo of the lentil soup with lots of the farm roots and leeks in it that I had for dinner last night. I just chunked up a bit of parsnip, root parsley and scorzonera, sliced leeks and sautéed all of that in olive oil before adding lentils, water and salt and then pressure cooking it all for 15 minutes. At the end I added a splash of lemon and was off to the races. Probably would have been better without the parsnips which were a little too sweet. It is good with carrots though, especially those yellow ones (even though the orange ones are prettier).
CSA sign ups are coming in nicely. There’s still plenty of space but enough folks are signing up that at least I know there’s still interest! I’m a little late germinating the first seeds of the season but they’re going in the germination chamber today and should be able to catch up in time for our earliest spring harvests. I always forget how much time it takes to get all of the propagation area ready in the spring and I need to make a note to myself to spend more time on that next January, or at least to a better job of organizing at everything at the end of next season. I did put up a completely new greenhouse at the end of last season so that made some extra work this year. Photos of that will certainly be coming when the first seedlings come out of the germination chamber and move into their new home.
