My best guess for the upcoming harvest on this Thursday is: beets, turnips, mustard greens, leeks, root parsley and radicchio. We’ll probably have some winter radishes on the farm stand if you didn’t get enough of those in the first harvest. I think there might still be some frisee out there too, but we’ll have to see how It’s been doing with this warm weather!
The photo above is from our first winter harvest day. It’s been warm and dry ever since and at this time of year that’s not necessarily a great thing even though it does make being outside a lot more pleasant! While there’s no absolute ideal, temperatures more in the refrigeration range with some overnight frost and maybe a hard freeze or two are what I’m typically hoping for this time of year. Every year is different and largely unpredictable. When I’m finalizing the planting plan each year I’m trying to anticipate the range of possible extremes and I plant with those in mind, expecting some things to not work out but for there to always be something good.
The diversified crop plan, with rotations from year to year and a good group of committed CSA members creates a kind of self-crop-insuring system and it’s always fun to see (and taste!) what works well due to the specifics of the year.
