A smaller number of items in the share this week, but most of them are bulky and/or heavy. That combined with the wet weather means we’re having an unusually high incidence of bag blowouts so be careful when picking up your share bag. In the bags are kale, rutabaga, parsnip, radicchio, green mustard and leeks. Kohlrabi showed up on the farm stand as promised. The kale bunches are a mix of winter red kale and lacinato rainbow. There are two heads of radicchio and it’s looking great right now! Pictured are Lusia and Chioggia types, but some folks are getting Verona. They’re all great and we should have more of all of them as well as some more varieties in the future. The super long Lincoln leeks will be finished after next week’s share so these are the last of them before we switch to our winter leek variety. Rutabagas are looking about as good as I’ve ever seen them and if you haven’t had them before I’d suggest chunking them up and roasting them with olive oil. You could do that with the parsnips too. Both also make good purees.
This was the first wet harvest day I can remember in quite a while. I know we have more of that in our future and it was pretty warm today so not really bad at all. We managed to get a good amount of field clean up done, pulling down pole beans and folding up insect netting from the summer crops. Clean up is the never ending project until we start planting again next spring.
