We’ve passed the half way mark for fall, and daylight savings. The first prediction is easy to make, it’ll be dark at pick up so we’ll have lights on. My guesses on what we’ll have in the share are: kale, mustard, radicchio, leeks, parsnips, rutabaga. Kohlrabi was in the plan but I don’t think we’ll have enough so if it’s ready we’ll put some on the farm stand. Similarly, we planned on Parsley but I think the stuff in the field hasn’t been doing well and there’s usually plenty in the you pick. The field tomatoes are open for gleaning, as is the fennel which all bolted this fall, probably due to the warmer and drier than average conditions in September.
With last week’s dry weather I was able to finally get the shallots and overwintered favas planted, as well as a couple of small patches of cover crop. At this point we’re pretty much in clean up mode, moving tarps around to cover unused sections of the fields, taking down trellises, and moving sprinklers and drip tape out of the fields. Thanks to our wonderful neighbors Golden Age Kombucha we also have a big pile of wood chips to spread which will help us keep the pick-up area from getting muddy this winter!
