Oh my, I’ve been terrible about getting these posts up online in a timely manner recently! Must be the time of year when there’s too much to do. In the share on Monday was: lettuce, beets with greens, summer squash, red onions, cucumbers, sweet peppers, tomatoes and a sprig of basil. Two heads of lettuce again and I’m hoping you’re all enjoying lots of salads because the lettuce has been abundant this year despite the original plan for just one head per week. The beets also got big so I would recommend cutting them up before cooking (if you’re going to cook them and not just grate them fresh onto your salad). The tomatoes and peppers are slowing a bit with the cooler nights so we’re probably just past the peak for at least the tomatoes, although peppers are still picking up slowly and another heat wave could have us back to heavy tomato harvests. There was a good bit of basil for Monday but I expect it’ll take until next week for Thursday to get it in the share.

In the field we planted mustards and arugula for the fall and winter shares. We’re almost finished with planting for the year and with dealing with the last flushes of summer weeds. It’s crucial to keep the weeds down this time of year to give the recently planted fall and winter crops enough space to grow before the days get too short and cool. The shortening days and cooler temps also seem to be a trigger for the weeds to put out as much seed as possible, something we’d like to prevent in order to avoid big flushes of weeds in the future.
