Summer Share 10 of 13

I totally forgot to do predictions last week, and I would have been wrong anyway. In the share are summer squash, romano beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, sweet peppers and lettuce. The romano beans were unexpected, I thought they’d be taking a break. The tomatoes and sweet peppers really liked the heat over the weekend so a relatively larger share of those. This is also the final potato dig for the year, the rest of our Amarosa and German Butter Ball potatoes. Both of these potatoes will keep for months in a cool dark place if you can’t use them right away, everything else is much more perishable. Lettuce today was two heads of blushed butter oak that definitely didn’t like going through that heat. It wasn’t going to hold until Thursday so all of it went in today’s shares. We’ll have some summer crisp lettuce on Thursday with a little luck.

It wasn’t the hottest day we’ve had on the farm this year, but the heat combined with the humidity definitely upped the ante and made it less pleasant to work in. Typically the shade gives a good amount of relief but with higher humidity it’s warmer in the shade. Still, we had enough shady work with cool water to get through the day, get the harvest in and weed some radicchio, radish, spinach and lettuce beds. Looks like it’s suppose to stay warm this week, which is good for the tomatoes and peppers, but I’m hoping for at least a little cooler conditions on Thursday, and maybe some better planting conditions for putting in even more fall and winter crops!
