Summer squash, sweet onions, carrots, Lemon and Salt and Pepper cucumbers, and red leaf lettuce. Shares continue to be slightly smaller than planned as we wait for some of the summer fruits to ripen. The cucumbers and summer squash are delicious right now and are hitting their peak. This will be the only week of our Ailsa Craig sweet onions as we need to get them out in order to make way for more plantings of lettuce. Really all of the onions will be harvested in the next few weeks, although some will need a bit of time to cure once we get them out of the field and before we distribute them. We harvested the first few ripe tomatoes and eggplant today so those were on the farm stand along with some basil, extra cucumbers and lettuce. I expect Thursday to look very similar. In the you pick the very first cherry tomatoes are ripe and the shiso is looking as good as I’ve ever seen it. We also have some very nice looking stevia plants in the you pick if you ever want to try an alternative sweetener – its leaves are insanely sweet!
One surprise this morning was that the church is having its parking lot repaired so there was a lot of noise as they cut, ground and scraped up cracked sections of asphalt. Many of you saw the progress when you came to pick up this evening. You can still get to the farm through the parking lot, you just need to park in the front section and be careful walking across the back section which is torn up in places. The pedestrian entrance at the corner of NE 55th and Emerson is closed right now, and there is also caution tape in the parking lot you can either go around or duck under. I talked to the crew and it sounded like Thursday they might be working on the front section of the lot. I expect there will still be a way to at least walk in from the street and the entrance from the south side is not affected.
In the field we got a good amount of bed prep for planting done, and a bit of weeding as well. With a little luck the entire farm will be planted by the end of next week!
