Summer Share 4 of 13

Summer squash made it into the shares today, two heads of lettuce, fresh red onions, gold beets, green beans and rhubarb. The rhubarb is in there because it was shading out some on the onions and when we cut it back we ended up with enough to give everyone a few lovely looking stalks. I’ve only ever used it in desserts, or making syrups and jams with added sugar, but I’m told it’s delicious roasted by itself if you happen to have the oven on this week. It can also be cut up and frozen for later cooking in desserts. Thursday’s share will look a little different, with only one head of lettuce and no green beans since Thursday got two heads of lettuce last week and the earliest green beans a week before the Monday folks did. I’m hoping we might have enough cucumbers to put in the shares on Thursday. It was close today, but the cucumbers went on the farm stand instead, along with some basil and kohlrabi. We’ll probably have some extra lettuce on the farm stand Thursday if you do want two heads instead of just one.

In the field today we got the onions weeded, I hope it’s the last time we have to do that but it wasn’t too bad. We also planted kale and lettuce for the fall and spent a bit of time trying to keep up with the extra irrigation needs from all this hot, windy weather!
