We had the first harvest of cucumbers today, just a few for the farm stand. Summer squash is slowly ramping up and I’m hopeful that we’ll have enough to put in the shares and not just on the farm stand next week. Also on the harvest list will be lettuce, beets and fresh onions. There were two heads of lettuce for Thursday this week and that’s possible for next Monday too, assuming the heat doesn’t do them in. That heat may bring on another little basil harvest, a crop that is prone to bolting when heat stressed, something we want to head off. A couple of the other items that were on the harvest plan when I made it last fall won’t be ready next week. We should have kohlrabi and green beans on the farm stand again.
We’ve been managing to stay more or less on top of the weeds and today the parsnips got a nice clean up, as did the sweet peppers. We also started getting the support stakes in place for the peppers to keep them from falling over when they get heavy with fruit in a few weeks. Fall plantings continued with rutabaga and fennel making it into the ground. Tomorrow I’ll be filling seedling trays with potting soil and seeds, mostly radicchio and lettuce.
