Summer share 1 of 13

A pretty decent start to summer with kale, parsley, favas, carrots, two heads of lettuce, kohlrabi and what is probably the last of the spring salad turnips. Thursday’s share should be similar with minor variations in the lettuce types.  The favas take a bit of work to shell (although I hear some folks don’t bother and just eat the pods too?) I almost always forgo double shelling them but if you haven’t had them before I recommend looking up some of the details for cooking – these are a special once a year treat. I usually just remove the beans from the pods and sauté them in olive oil, maybe with some of that parsley chopped up and tossed in pasta. They’re great boiled in salted water too, not too long. On the kohlrabi we left some of the leaves on and you can try cooking them. They’re kind of like kohlrabi flavored collard greens.

The rain this weekend was great and meant we didn’t have to irrigate today (except in the hoop house.) It also meant the weeds seemed to grow extra big in the field so we spent some of the afternoon hoeing what we could get to. With two harvests a week this is the time of year we start to get behind. We did also do a little tomato training, getting them to grow up their strings. I’m hoping we’ll have time on Thursday to do some more planting as well as weeding and all of the harvest!
