Pretty much as predicted: lettuce, green garlic, radishes, choi, red mustard, salad turnips and kale. This was the last of the green garlic so we’ll probably have green onions again in its place. We might have a different lettuce variety and collards instead of kale. The green garlic is the same plant that makes garlic cloves, just very immature. All parts of the plant are edible and garlicy and it makes a great pesto, addition to eggs, or just about anything else you’d use garlic in.
It’s been mostly nice to have some moisture falling on the fields again. The downside is that it’s creating a bit more weed pressure, but the upside is that it’s making it a little easier to work up beds for all of the plantings that are happening right now. Earlier this week we planted out the tomatoes, peppers and seeded more arugula and carrots. The cool conditions aren’t ideal for the tomatoes and peppers, but they really needed to get out of the greenhouse and the soil seems to be warm enough so hopefully the air temps will come back up soon too. Today we planted cucumbers and more lettuce. Next week is slated to be another big planting week with summer squash, more cucumbers, pole beans and lots of greens.
At some point in the next week or two we’re going to need to have a big hoeing party! All this planting means we’re going to have a lot of beds to hoe very soon!
