Predictions for Fall Share #5

As usual, fall is feeling very unpredictable. The forecast was for rain all day yesterday, and really we just had an afternoon shower and the rain didn’t start until after CSA pick up regular hours. My best prediction for next week’s share is either collards or kale, kohlrabi, celeriac, beets, radishes, and more escarole. As always there’s likely to be some variation once we actually get out into the field. Radicchio is also likely, and the B schedule got it yesterday so we owe the A schedule an extra round. If we have time there may be salad turnips on the farm stand. We didn’t have time to get the last of them these past two weeks and I’m not sure how they are at this point.

Speaking of A and B schedules, next week is week five for the A schedule, then we have a week break for Thanksgiving before coming back to the B schedule the first week of December. Week six is the final week of Fall and is the two weeks before Christmas.

Field work today consisted mostly of finally taking down the pole beans from their trellising. A bit of very muddy wheel hoeing also happened, not sure how effective that was at anything other than warming me up. Meanwhile, I’ve started the planning process for 2025. Let me know if you have ideas for improvements of any sort for the coming year. I have all sorts of ideas, we’ll see how many of them actually happen. Only photo I remembered to take today was the water meter. No more irrigation but we’re always using water to clean up the harvest before packing it up. Gotta leave as much of the soil on the farm as possible!
