Mustard greens, leeks, fennel, parsnips carrots, chard and escarole. The mustard is huge, the parsnips and escarole are small, the chard has holes in it, but everything should be tasty. These were the last of the Lincoln leeks so next Thursday will see the first of the Blue Solaize, our winter leek. I thought about putting kohlrabi in the shares today but opted for the fennel which won’t hold as well in the field, especially if it gets colder.
It was surprisingly warm and sunny today, a nice surprise. It was particularly good to be out in the field and we got some good work done. All of the drip tape and sprinklers are out of the field now. We’re late in planting some green garlic, but there’s a bed cleared for it now so maybe we’ll have another window in the next couple of weeks to actually get it in the ground. We haven’t had garlic on the farm for a while since rust became a problem (you’ve probably seen the rust on our leeks this year). I don’t think we can get a reasonable mature garlic crop next year, but the rust often comes later, so we may be able to harvest some fresh garlic greens early in the spring before it sets in.
