Predictions for Fall Share #4

Carrots, chard, escarole, kohlrabi, leeks, mustard, parsnips. That’s feeling like a pretty wild guess, and there are some other possible options like fennel, rutabaga and celeriac. If we have time there may be some salad turnips on the farm stand, and radicchio will either be on the farm stand or in the shares.

Oh how tricky trying to decide what to harvest this time of year is, and such a balancing act. For one, crops often look good at a glance, but then reveal hidden damage when we actually start harvesting. For another, we’re essentially storing lots of the crops in the ground at this point and gambling a little on what the weather will do. Some will hold better if it gets colder sooner, but will get too big if it stays warm, others will hold ok if it stays warm, but might be damaged if we get a hard frost. As always we’re trying to provide a balance of items to fill out your seasonal meals for a week or two.

Besides harvest, yesterday it was very wet in the field with intermittent rain. It wasn’t too cold, which was nice and after harvest we were able to get some of the trellis clean up done, as well as pulling some of the drip tape out of the field to make it easier to prepare beds for more cover crops when we get a weather window for planting.
