Fall Share #2

Again I’m late posting but at least I did remember to take a photo of the share. In the share last Thursday was: kale, salad turnips, tomatoes, fennel, celery, leeks, sweet pepper and lettuce. This week the B schedule share should be more or less the same. It’s supposed to start raining so that might change things a little. The kale in the photo is Madeley, one of the two types we’re growing. This Thursday will probably see Lacinato Rainbow instead as we pretty much cleaned out the Madeley and it needs a few weeks to recover before the next harvest.

Today looks like the last dry day for a while in the forecast. I took advantage to seed some triticale and field peas as a cover crop in a few of our empty beds, and to hoe out more of the summer weeds from the leeks. If the weather cooperates we’ll continue to seed more cover crop as the remaining summer crops come out, at least for the next couple of weeks. Whatever we don’t get seeded this fall will get seeded when the sun comes back in February – the days are definitely getting shorter and that and the cooler temps really slow down the plant growth for most crops, including most cover crops. Thankfully that, and the return of the rains, means it’s also the end of irrigation season!
