Fall Share #1

Fall is off to a good start, and the weather has really shifted! Chard, hakurei turnips with greens, French Grey shallots, parsley, sweet pepper, tomatoes, yellow onions, spinach and butter lettuce all made it into the shares. On the farm stand we had some of the last cucumbers, eggplant and sauce tomatoes. We haven’t been getting a lot of sun and heat so the tomatoes and especially the sweet peppers are very slow to ripen. We’re giving some of those out a little under-ripe and they’ll fully color and sweeten if you leave them on your kitchen counter for a few days. I got a new part for our seeder that lets me seed the turnips a little less heavily and that extra space each seed is getting is allowing the roots to grow much larger in the same amount of time! Fingers crossed that next week’s share will look more or less the same.

There wasn’t a lot of time for field work today with such a big harvest but we did make some more progress on knocking back weeds. The ground was wet from rain which was really nice for pulling some of the grasses that have become a major problem this year. It looks like the forecast is a little drier for the coming week and that should be good for getting some of the beds ready for some overwintered crops like favas and green onions, as well as cover crop seedings to feed the soil.
