Predictions for Summer Share #11

The sun is noticeably lower in the mornings these days, shadows are getting longer in the afternoon. Here’s what we’re expecting for next week: green crisp lettuce, collard greens, tomatoes, cipollini onions and yellow beets. Summer squash and cucumbers seem to be waning, as they usually do this time of year so those will probably go on the farm stand from now on. Sweet peppers are starting to come on and if enough ripen with the heat they’ll be in the shares, otherwise the first of them will be on the farm stand. We may have another round of romano beans too. It’s hard to tell how much is hanging right now but I tried a few and they are super sweet. On the farm stand we’ll have more eggplant and basil. Both of those are on their way out right now too so get them while they last.

The you pick area is near peak production right now: cherry tomatoes, padron peppers and hot peppers starting to ripen, tomatillos and ground cherries, cucamelons, lots of culinary herbs.

Summer is still here but signs that it’s on its way out. There’s a last big push of weeds and so much work that needs to get done before the rains return in earnest. Yesterday was a good weeding day and we also managed to get in some mustards and frisée for fall and winter harvests. The first of the dry beans came out of the field and we have more of those, as well as a few other seed crops to harvest soon.

Monday is Labor Day and we’ll be harvesting on our regular Monday schedule so no changes for pick up. We have three more weeks of summer before fall shares start and there are still 9 slots available. Sign ups are through our website. Keep ‘em coming!
