Predictions for Summer Share #9

The summer is flying by and the weather has been feeling almost fall like! Next week’s share should be similar to this past week with butter lettuce, Madeley kale, summer squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, and we’ll add in more of the French Grey shallots and some yellow storage onions. We pulled all of the rest of the onions and shallots out of the field to cure yesterday so expect to see those in the shares over the next few weeks. They were getting to be a weedy mess so it’s nice to have that space mowed down now and ready to be prepared for a winter cover crop to feed the soil.

In the you pick section the cherry tomatoes are really on right now and the more they get picked they more they’ll produce. Same goes for the padron peppers and I’ve also noticed the first of the ground cherries and tomatillos starting to ripen (both in the same row as the cherry tomatoes). Another fun little you pick item that’s just starting are the Sanditas, aka Mexican sour gherkin, cucamelon, or mouse melons. This are tiny little cucumber like fruits that look like a miniature watermelon and you can ask Sara or Catherine where they are when you pick up your share.

Besides pulling the onions and mowing down weeds we’re still making a little progress on hoeing the recent plantings for fall and winter.  We still have fall shares available and you can sign up through the website to get one. They’re just $145 with every other week pick up October through December (or get two and pick up every week)! Shares can be purchased with SNAP benefits and are eligible for DUFB which potentially covers half the price!
