Tomatoes have started producing and with a little luck we’ll have them regularly through the end of the season. Lettuce has been suffering from the heat but we should still have small heads next week. Summer squash and cucumbers are up and down a bit with the heat and cool but they should continue for a few weeks. Our late planting of kale is looking pretty good so we’re planning on putting some of that in. We’ll also try to get to the carrots that we missed last week, and possibly some more of the French Grey shallots.
It was hot again yesterday but it looks like it should cool down a bit next week. We managed to get to quite a bit of hoeing of the new crops, as well as mowing down weeds that have gotten a bit out of control in the tomatoes and parsnips. Mowing down the weeds will at least give the plants a bit more light but we’ll still have to go back to really clean up those beds.
Banking on temperatures cooling down in the next few days I put spinach seed in the ground yesterday. Spinach doesn’t like to germinate when it’s too hot so fingers crossed it comes up well. This time of year is tricky with a lot of the seeding. Often it’s hotter than ideal for germinating seeds, but if wait too long to put the seed in it gets to late for the plants to mature before we loose too much light and warmth in the fall. It’s similar to the spring where we’re anxiously waiting for appropriate weather windows to get the seed in the ground and it’s one of the reasons that most of our crops are grown in the greenhouse as seedlings where we have a little more control, and then are planted out when they get a little bigger.
Again, I forgot to take a field photo – just too busy! So here’s one of the lettuce seedlings in the greenhouse waiting to get planted next week.
