Lettuce, red onion, cucumbers, chard, summer squash, tomato, baby leeks. Monday’s shares also have basil so that’s shown in the middle of the photo and Thursday got the basil two weeks ago. From here out we’ll probably put any remaining basil on the farm stand and if you’d like to make a larger batch of pesto you can special order it in bulk. We’ve also been having romano beans, and eggplant on the farm stand and that should continue for a bit.
The heat, and also the resulting heavy weed pressure, have thrown our harvests off a bit in several ways. Today we were going to try harvesting carrots but decided our time was better spent knocking back weeds in the tomatoes to give them some more light and air, and in the new plantings of fall crops to make sure they don’t get buried before they get established. The carrots will wait for another harvest day and continue to size up as they do. Tomatoes are just starting to ripen, cucumbers are peaking, and I’m seeing the first sweet peppers starting to size up on the plants (which also need to be rescued from the weeds!)
While controlling weeds has become a top priority in the past few weeks, we’re also still planting and today we got in the winter carrots and some late lettuces. The biggest fall plantings are behind us, but we’ll continue to plant small quantities of some of the fall and winter veggies through the rest of the month.
